A Carry-On for Every Season

How to pack one bag for a week anywhere — and why fewer clothes make for better trips.

Nobody has ever come home from a trip wishing they had packed more. Yet most of us still overpack, bringing outfits for imaginary occasions and shoes for every possible weather. The fix is not a bigger bag. It is a better system.

Build around one palette

Choose two or three colours that work together and pack only within them. Everything then matches everything else, and a week's worth of outfits can come from a handful of pieces.

The rule of threes

  • Three tops, three bottoms or dresses, three layers.
  • One pair of shoes on your feet, one in the bag.
  • One thing that makes you feel dressed up.

Nobody has ever come home from a trip wishing they had packed more.

Pack for the place, not the fantasy

Check the forecast, think about what you will actually do, and leave the “just in case” items at home. Almost anything you have forgotten can be bought where you are going — often with a better story attached.
