The Return of Red

After seasons of neutrals, the runway turned red: sequins, lacquer and a colour that refuses to be quiet.

If one colour defined the autumn/winter runways, it was red. Not a polite burgundy or a seasonal rust, but a proper, saturated red — in sequins, in patent leather, in heavy wool coats and in the occasional head-to-toe look that felt almost confrontational after so many seasons of beige.

Why red, why now

Colour trends rarely have a single cause, but red tends to arrive when fashion wants to feel optimistic and a little defiant. After a run of muted, investment-minded collections, designers seem ready to have fun again — and red is the most direct way to say so.

How to wear it

The runway showed red in every quantity, from a single accessory to complete looks. For most wardrobes, the useful approach is one red thing per outfit: a bag, a shoe, a knit. Red works especially well against grey, navy and black, where it looks deliberate rather than festive.
