The Camera Roll as a Mood Board

Every designer has one: a phone full of doorways, shadows and strangers' coats. How everyday photography became fashion's most important research tool.

Designers used to fill notebooks with sketches, swatches and torn-out pages. Many still do. But the most important research tool in fashion today is probably the phone camera — and the thousands of images that accumulate on it without any particular plan.

Looking as a habit

What makes a camera roll useful is not the quality of the images but the habit they record. A colour seen on a wall, the way a stranger has tied a scarf, the light on a staircase at a particular hour. Individually these are nothing. Together they become a vocabulary.

From roll to runway

The path from a phone photograph to a finished garment is rarely direct. But ask designers where an idea started and the answer is often a picture they took without thinking. The camera roll is a reminder that inspiration rarely announces itself.
